How to Choose the Right LED OT Lights

Different procedures require different lighting specifications:

Surgery Type Light Requirements
General Surgery Medium-to-high intensity, adjustable focus
Orthopedic Deep cavity illumination, high shadow dilution
Neuro/Cardiac Extremely high precision, color rendering
Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopy) Compatibility with camera systems
ENT/Dental Small focus field, high mobility

 Brightness (Illuminance / Lux Level)

Measured in lux (1 lux = 1 lumen/m²):

Application Ideal Lux
General OT Use 120,000 – 160,000 lux
Deep Cavity / Cardiac 160,000 – 180,000 lux
Minor Procedures 80,000 – 120,000 lux

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

  • Measures how accurately colors appear under light.
  • CRI ≥ 90 is essential to differentiate tissues and blood vessels.

Color Temperature (Kelvin)

  • Measured in Kelvin (K), usually between 3,500K and 5,500K.
  • Look for adjustable color temperature (warm to cool white) to suit different procedures.
Color Temp Effect
3500K (Warm) Natural skin tones, relaxing
4500–5000K (Neutral) Balanced view
5500K (Cool) Enhances contrast, good for vascular work

Shadow Reduction & Light Field

  • LED lights with multi-reflector designs reduce shadows from hands or instruments.
  • Depth of illumination: At least 1,000–1,400 mm is ideal for deep surgeries.
  • Light field diameter: Adjustable (standard is 180–300 mm)

Heat Management

  • LEDs produce less heat than halogen, but effective heat dissipation is still essential.
  • Look for cool-to-touch heads and fanless silent operation to maintain OR comfort.

Mounting Type

Mounting Use Case
Ceiling-Mounted Most common, permanent installations
Wall-Mounted Small rooms or backup lighting
Mobile/Floor Stand Versatile, ideal for outpatient/minor ORs

Camera and Monitor Integration (Optional)

  • In-built HD or 4K cameras are available for teaching, documentation, or MIS.
  • Some systems allow video routing to external monitors or PACS.

Sterile Controls and Adjustments

  • Touchless sensors or sterile handle control options for:
    • Focus
    • Intensity
    • Light field size
    • Color temperature

Battery Backup / UPS Compatibility

  • Essential in regions with unstable power
  • Ensure light heads can operate during power outages via UPS
